Quarry Hill Nature Center

I am a little embarrassed to admit that in nearly 18 months of living in Rochester, this past weekend was my very first time to Quarry Hill Nature Center (701 Silver Creek Road). Wow- 320 acres of paved and hiking trails, a fishing pond, a butterfly garden, fossil beds in limestone quarry, sandstone caves, a biking trail linking to downtown Rochester, and an interactive exploration hall. Admission is free. They also feature nature based events, guided hikes, classes, and can used as a birthday party venue throughout the year. We were lucky to go on a gorgeous fall day and observe the fall colors. My kids were huge fans of the exploration hall. Basically, we can't wait to go again!

Be sure to visit their website for their calendar of events.

Yeager Trail at Oxbow

We recently tried out one of the many hikes in Oxbow Park. This one starts out in Zollman Zoo (just past the bison and deer) and is short and flat enough for even a three year old to complete on his own. What is your favorite trail at Oxbow?

Whitewater State Park: Chimney Rock Trail

We wanted to spend our Labor Day outdoors and hiking is a family favorite. So we headed to Whitewater State Park, about a 40 minute drive east of Rochester. All visitors need a permit to park, so visit the main office (along Highway 74) before embarking on any activities. A single day pass is $5. At the office we spoke to a ranger about hikes and found one that suited us- something not too long, but a good workout and great views. We were referred to Chimney Rock Trail and it did not disappoint! The hike takes you to the top of the limestone bluffs with views all around and the Whitewater River below. We had our two little ones in hiking backpacks but I do think a slightly older child (5 plus maybe?) could hike up the trail.

Hiking is something we really enjoy doing as a family, what trails do you recommend around here?

Douglas Trail

This past Sunday our family went for an evening stroll along the Douglas Trail, which is situated near our home. It was beautiful, and I've heard at dusk the lightning bugs come out. I think once fall arrives and the leaves change it will be even more stunning. Hopefully we'll fit in a few more walks before winter.

The Douglas State Trail is a 12.5 mile, multiple use state trail developed on an abandoned railroad grade. This trail crosses outstanding rural scenery, traversing some of the richest agricultural land in Minnesota. One treadway is paved for bicyclists, hikers, in-line skaters and skiers; the other is a natural surface for horseback riders and snowmobilers.

The trail begins in northwestern Rochester, travels through the small town of Douglas (for which the trail is named) and terminates in Pine Island.
